Murray overtakes Nadal to reach Montreal final

Andy Murray clinched the No. 2 world ranking in men’s tennis despite struggling with his serve in Saturday’s semifinal victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Montreal Masters. The British third seed won 6-4 7-6 (10-8) in the Canadian hardcourt event to overtake Rafael Nadal and set up a final clash with either American fifth seed Andy Roddick or sixth-seeded Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro.

Sharapova storms into third round in Paris

Maria Sharapova stepped up her comeback after injury to claim the scalp of 11th seed Nadia Pedrova to reach the third round of the French Open in Paris on Wednesday. The former world number one had come into the second grand slam of the season with only two matches in a minor tournament in Poland under her belt, but surprised fellow Russian with a 6-2 1-6 8-6 victory.

Nadal and Murray in Florida 4th round

World number one Rafael Nadal reached the fourth round of the ATP and WTA hardcourt tournament at Key Biscayne in Florida on Monday with a 7-5 6-3 success over Portugal’s Frederico Gil. Nadal, who took the year’s first Grand Slam title by defeating Roger Federer in the Australian Open final, won 89 percent of his first serve points to just 57 percent for Gil. The Spanish star was joined at the next stage by Briton Andy Murray who defeated Nicolas Massu 6-4 6-4

Nadal wins after saving five match points

Top seed Rafael Nadal had to save five match points before beating Argentina’s David Nalbandian 3-6 7-6 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals of the Masters Series tournament at Indian Wells. The fourth round match in California finished at 2 am local time on Thursday morning with world number one Nadal racing through the decider after surviving the scares in the second set.
