Liedson salvages point for struggling Portugal

Brazilian-born Liedson kept alive Portugal’s slender World Cup qualifying hopes with a late equalizer against Group 1 leaders Denmark in Copenhagen. Defeat would have all but spelt the end for Portugal, who made the semifinals in the 2006 World Cup and boast the world’s most expensive footballer in Cristiano Ronaldo.

Vettel claims pole position for Turkish GP

Sebastian Vettel grabbed pole for Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix in Istanbul to deny Jenson Button a hat-trick of starts from top spot on the grid. The German Red Bull driver left it until the final hot lap of the closing 10-minute qualifying session to demote championship leader Button down to second, with Brawn GP team-mate Rubens Barrichello back in third position. It is the third pole of the 21-year-old’s career, with both his victories to date coming from the front of the grid, in Italy last year and China this season

Button wins Australian Grand Prix for Brawn

Britain’s Jenson Button won the opening race of the 2009 Formula One season after dominating the Australian Grand Prix for the newly-formed Brawn GP team. Button, who started from pole at Albert Park, was claiming the second victory of his 154-race career to complete a remarkable reversal of fortunes for the former Honda team who were facing an uncertain future when the Japanese car manufacturer withdrew from F1 late last year.

Title race revived as Liverpool crush United

The Premier League title race was thrown wide open on Saturday as Liverpool crushed 10-man Manchester United 4-1 at Old Trafford to move to within four points of the defending champions. Rafael Benitez’s side superbly responded from going a goal behind as Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard turned the match on its head before the break, with Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena easing Liverpool well clear in the second half. In contrast, it was a day to forget for United defender Nemanja Vidic, who gifted Torres the equalizer before being sent off against Liverpool for the second time this season
