Netanyahu rules out freeze on Israeli settlements, source says

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that a complete halt of Jewish settlements will not happen, according to a parliament source. Netanyahu said at a closed-door Knesset committee meeting that Israel would agree only to a partial reduction of housing construction and for a limited time, not the year the United States would like, said a government official who was not authorized to speak about the meeting and did not want to be identified.

Britain denies deal with Libya over slain London cop

The British government has not dropped the case of a British police officer who was shot dead outside the Libyan embassy in London 25 years ago, the Foreign Office insisted Sunday. Prime Minister Gordon Brown raised the killing of Yvonne Fletcher with Libya’s leader, Moammar Gadhafi, as recently as July, when he visited Tripoli, a Foreign Office spokesman said.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai maintains a substantial lead in the country’s August presidential polls, according to partial results issued by election officials on Saturday. Out of 5,545,149 valid votes from 92.82 percent of the country’s polling stations, Karzai has 3,009,559 and his closest challenger, Abdullah Abdullah, the nation’s former foreign minister, has 1,558,591, the Independent Election Commission said.

The shooting death of a Muslim woman and three others five years ago has sparked a political row in India after a probe said the gun battle in which she was alleged to have been killed was staged. Ishrat Jehan, 19, and the others died in what the police in Gujarat — a state ruled by Hindu nationalists — called a shootout on June 15, 2004.

Chavez wraps up controversial tour with stop in Spain
