Sacked French workers free 3M manager

French workers on Thursday freed the manager of a factory run by U.S. company 3M held hostage for more than 24 hours in a labor dispute over terms for laid-off staff. Luc Rousselet was allowed to leave the plant in Pithiviers, central France, early on Thursday morning after talks between unions and officials from 3M France.

1,200 face redundancy at HSBC

British banking giant HSBC announced Wednesday that up to 1,200 employees may lose their jobs as the troubled banking sector continued to falter. The bank, which laid off 500 banking staff last December and 1,100 investment banking jobs in September, said operating conditions for banks in the UK were “extremely challenging” and were unlikely to improve for some time

‘Sick’ economy forces layoffs at New York hospital

A New York City hospital will lay off 240 employees, including doctors, nurses and management positions, because of the difficult economic times, the hospital announced in a statement Monday. The paper published its final print edition Tuesday as the P-I makes a transformation into an online-only news outlet. A skeleton crew of 20 to 25 staffers will remain at the new Seattle PI.com while more than 140 staffers will lose their jobs.
