Early results show major loss for Fatah party’s old guard

Senior members of the Palestinian Fatah party appear to have suffered a serious upset in a vote to determine the party’s key decision-making body. Fatah party members voted among 18 candidates who are vying for seats on the Central Committee, the party’s highest decision-making body. Final results will be released later on Tuesday, the last day of the party’s weeklong conference — its first in 20 years.

China mourns death of ex-leader’s wife, Communist stalwart

Chinese leaders Monday mourned the death of Zhuo Lin, wife of former national leader Deng Xiaoping. Zhuo, a former consultant of the Central Military Commission General Office, died July 29 at age 93 and was cremated Monday, state-run news agency Xinhua reported. She was “an excellent Communist Party of China member and time-honored loyal communist fighter,” the party said in a written statement

EU suspends aid budgeted for Honduras

Pressure for a resolution to a political standoff in Honduras has increased after the breakdown of talks between the two sides over the weekend. The European Union on Monday suspended aid to the Central American country, which has found itself increasingly isolated since the June 28 military-led coup that ousted President Jose Manuel Zelaya. Representatives of Zelaya over the weekend failed to reach an accord with representatives from the interim Honduran government of Roberto Micheletti, who was named by congress hours after the military detained Zelaya and sent him to Costa Rica.

California officer admits to sexual assault while on duty

A former California police officer accused of sexually assaulting a motorist during a traffic stop pleaded guilty in federal court, the Central District of California U.S. Attorney said Friday. Feliciano Sanchez, 34, admitted in court Thursday that while on duty on May 16, 2007, he pulled over a female driver in a traffic stop and forced her to perform oral sex on him, according to a news release from U.S
