Government agents used tear gas to disperse demonstrators, and beat and kidnapped a human rights lawyer, the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran said Saturday, citing witnesses. The advocacy group said human rights lawyer Shadi Sadr, who was walking with friends to Friday prayers, was confronted by people dressed in civilian clothes. They pushed her into a car and drove off, the group said, citing witnesses.
The death toll climbed to at least 12 in a gas explosion on a freight train in western Italy, officials said Tuesday. A child was among those killed, said Antonio Garufi, a local government official. The number of injured had risen to 36, with 16 in critical condition.
In at least one incident Saturday, police wavered in their resolve to break up demonstrators who had turned out to protest last week’s election results, a witness told CNN. “The commander was shouting at the protesters,” said Roger Cohen, a columnist for the New York Times, who came upon perhaps a dozen police who had faced off against a number of demonstrators at about 5 p.m. “The commander was shouting at the protesters, one of whom had thrown a rock at him,” Cohen said.
