Venus through as women’s seeds tumble at SW19

Defending champion Venus Williams avenged a blot on her 2009 season to set up a last-16 clash with Ana Ivanovic at Wimbledon, but their fellow former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic and French Open winner Svetlana Kuznetsova crashed out of the tournament on Saturday. Williams crushed Carla Suarez Navarro 6-0 6-4 to obliterate memories of her upset defeat by the 34th-ranked Spaniard in the second round of the Australian Open in January.

Injured Roddick misses out on Murray final

Second seed Andy Roddick is forced to retire with an ankle injury during the first set of his Queen’s Club semifinal against fellow-American James Blake, meaning he misses out on a final showdown against British top seed Andy Murray. Roddick, who was bidding for a record fifth title at the London grass-court tournament, injured his right ankle when he slipped at the back of the court in the fourth game of the first set.

Australia crash out of Twenty20 World Cup

The world’s top-rated Test nation Australia crashed out of the Twenty20 World Cup after losing by six wickets to Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge. Australia, who are also world champions in the 50-over version of cricket, could not transfer their skill to the shortest form of the game and will not contest the Super 8 phase.
