Ricky Martin happy for Ian Thorpe

Latin music star Ricky Martin has expressed his support for Ian Thorpe but has refused to confirm reports that he mentored the champion swimmer through the process of coming out.

“I am extremely happy that he is talking about his happiness, and that is where I would like to leave it,” Martin said when asked about his relationship with Thorpe while in Melbourne on Wednesday.

Entertainment reporter Peter Ford said on Monday that Martin had been “guiding” Ian Thorpe.

Thorpe came out as gay in a TV interview with the iconic Sir Michael Parkinson on Sunday night.

If there is any celebrity who knows the pressure Thorpe must have felt, it would be Martin, who is currently in Australia for The Voice.

The singer stunned his fans when he told the world he was gay 15 years ago.

However, in an interview earlier this year, Martin said he would come out again if he could.

“It felt amazing,” Martin told Kiis FM.

“I wish I could come out again because that moment felt very blissful.

“It really feels amazing and then when it happens you realise all your fears were in your head,” Martin said in May.

In the tell-all interview with Parkinson, Thorpe spoke of his fears and how he could no longer live a lie.

Thorpe issued a brief message on Twitter after the broadcast: “To everyone who has sent a message of support I sincerely thank you”.

Rihanna backtracks from foray into global politics

Rihanna has joined the debate on the deadly Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but only for a mere eight minutes.

The pop artist tweeted the hashtag #FreePalestine, but within eight minutes the tweet had been deleted from her Twitter feed.

Deleted after 8 minutes: Rihanna's #FreePalestine tweet.

Though not before the tweet had been retweeted almost 7000 times.

Since deleting the initial tweet, Rihanna has shared a less-polarizing perspective.

Let’s pray for peace and a swift end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict! Is there any hope…. pic.twitter.com/jHD56KXkcu

Rihanna is not the only celebrity to have been caught tweeting and deleting a #FreePalestine tweet.

American NBA star, Dwight Howard posted the same tweet in response to a fan who shared pictures of Gaza with him.

His tweet was deleted shortly after it was posted and it was followed up with a series of tweets, withdrawing him from the debate.

previous tweet was a mistake. I have never commented on international politics and never will.

Amare Stoudemire of the New York Knicks also found himself retracting a post on Instagram, which read “pray for Palestine.”

Weird Al’s grammar gaffe in Word Crimes song

Weird Al Yankovic is so busy ripping pop stars apart with his musical parodies that he didn’t notice his own mistake in his latest pop send up.

In Word Crimes, Yankovic’s parody of Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines, the comedian is so busy preaching about grammatical errors that he, ironically, doesn’t notice his own.

Just over three minutes into the song, Yankovic uses a glaring split infinitive when he sings: “Try your best to not drool”.

But it didn’t take long for the internet to spot it on the very day he released the video.

The website crushable, quickly devoted a whole page to talking about the grammatical error.

In the rest of the song, Yankovic then claims he’s going to try to “educate ya”, but it’s hard to take education advice from a guy who lands a split infinitive into a song about grammatical errors.

To give Yankovic the benefit of the doubt, there are some pretty handy tips in there. He sings about when to use an apostrophe, what a contraction is and tells his listeners they should know when to use “less” or “fewer”.

But hearing that refrain “I hate these Word Crimes” is hard to take seriously when he makes his own glaring grammatical error mistake.

Perhaps he meant it ironically, so let’s give Weird Al the benefit of the doubt and say that he did because at least he has the ability to make us laugh.

Details of Sandra Bullock’s terrifying home invasion

Sandra Bullock’s recent encounter with a stalker in her home reads like a scene from a scary movie in newly released documents, painting a portrait of an obsessed fan who described himself as her “husband.”

Joshua James Corbett, 39, was later found to have a stash of illegal weapons including two fully automatic rifles and a machine gun at his home. But he was unarmed when he broke into Bullock’s home, affidavits in the case said.

Investigators said the sleeping actress was awakened at 6:30 am on June 8 by banging noises, opened her bedroom door and saw a dark-clad stranger moving toward the stairs.

Bullock, who has portrayed brave, strong women on screen, took quick action, locking the door and summoning police.

“Sandy, I’m sorry!” the man shouted as he was being taken away. “Don’t press charges.”

Police determined Corbett had scaled the gates of the home and forced open a locked sunroom glass door. He remains in jail awaiting trial and could face more than seven years in prison.

The incident shocked Hollywood and resurrected memories of other stars plagued by stalkers. Actress Rebecca Schaeffer was slain by a stalker in the 1980s and her death led to tightened laws to make stalking a crime and keep stalkers away from their prey.

Madonna, Steven Spielberg, Ryan Seacrest, Paris Hilton and others became stalking victims but were not harmed.

The writings of Corbett, detailed in a search warrant affidavit filed by the Bullock case investigators, revealed the depth of his obsession. Many stalkers have been ordered to undergo psychological counseling as part of their sentences.

The newly released affidavits gave the first detailed account of what happened inside Bullock’s home.

Corbett had a letter he had written to the actress the day before the break-in professing his love for her and insisting he was her husband and the father of her son.

“I love you. You are very special to me and without you in my life there is only misery,” said the letter….You are my girl!…You are my wife by law, the law of God and you belong to me and me to you.”

Corbett revealed he had been watching Bullock’s movements, saw her return home from an American Film Institute gala on June 5 and wished he could follow her inside the gates to her house. “I will be waiting by those gates when you decide to open them to me…,” he wrote.

At another point, he told the actress, “You are so hot and intelligent, lissome and taught (sic).”

The letter was signed, “Your husband, Joshua James Corbett.”

The police affidavit said Bullock arrived home about 1am, showered and went to bed. She was awakened early the next morning by banging noises she thought were coming from her third-floor workout room. The sound then shifted to the living room and she became concerned for her safety, the affidavit said.

Police said Corbett was walking down the stairs when they arrived. He acknowledged breaking in, they said, and told them he was trying to alert Bullock that her security was not impervious to intruders. He said he didn’t want to upset Bullock and thought she would not be home.

The question of why Corbett was stockpiling arms at his home and at an airport hangar remained unanswered.

Film based on street game

A freelance filmmaker and director has been announced as a finalist in this year’s Uni Shorts International Student Film Festival.

Joey De Guzman, who moved to New Zealand from the Philippines 14 years ago, began making films while at school.

He always wanted to make a film about a Filipino street game he used to play as a child called tumbang preso, which translates to jailbreak. An opportunity to make it presented itself by coincidence.

He was in the Philippines and about to film a music video, but the rest of the crew were four hours late.

While waiting, he met a young boy and asked him to make a kite. He followed the boy around, filming, while the boy gathered his friends and resources to make the kite.

A year later, De Guzman went back to the Philippines to find the boy. When he did, he followed the boy and his friends and filmed their lives, which included playing tumbang preso, the children’s favourite game.

“And then he started talking about his dreams.”

“What he wanted to be when we grows up and his friends did the same thing. His dream is to be a policeman . . . and I saw a link between the game and their dreams.”

Not only were the children’s stories meaningful, but it is important to De Guzman to tell stories that reflect his own experiences.

“In the Philippines a lot of people are into popular culture and I think it’s important to keep your roots alive.

“I’m [in New Zealand], I’m growing up here, I miss so much about home,” De Guzman says.

The short film Tumbang Preso (Jailbreak) has won best documentary in a student film competition in Canada and he hopes this festival, run by Unitec, will be just as successful.

“I felt really good when I found out I got in because I’ve entered this particular competition twice before with my other films and I didn’t get in. I was like ‘Yes finally, I got one!’.”

De Guzman hopes becoming a finalist will help his career as a director.

“It shows that you have international recognition . . . you’re competing on an international stage and it brings you up a different level,” he says.

“And it’s good to have your filmed screened in different countries to tell your story.”

The film festival runs from September 12 to 14 and includes panel sessions and guest speakers. The cost is $45 for the general public and $25 for students, which covers screenings, discussion forums and meals.
