No Ellen appearance for Maurice Williamson

Cabinet Minister Maurice Williamson has missed out on his chance to appear on the American chat-show Ellen.

Williamson shot to international fame after a speech in Parliament last month supporting the gay marriage bill.

Among his foreign admirers was television host Ellen DeGeneres who tweeted a link to his speech and invited him to appear on her show.

However, Williamson confirmed this morning he would not be going to Los Angeles.

“We have been unable to reach agreement and timing constraints related to the show’s filming now prevent an appearance from happening,” he said in a statement.

Prime Minister John Key had given the Pakuranga MP the go-ahead to appear on the show, saying: “He is very funny and there is always a serious message in there.”
