New York City reports 2nd swine-flu-related death

WHO says more than 12,000 cases of swine flu have been confirmed worldwide.
A second New York City resident has died after contracting swine flu, the city’s Health Department reported Sunday.

The victim was a woman in her 50s who had underlying health conditions, said Jessica Scaparotti, a Health Department spokeswoman. The news came a week after the city’s first reported fatality from the H1N1 virus. That victim, an assistant principal at a public school, also had an underlying health condition, the department reported. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed nine deaths associated with swine flu in six states among more than 6,500 U.S. cases. Sunday’s reported fatality was not included in that total. The worldwide total before Sunday’s report was 86 deaths out of more than 12,000 cases, according to the World Health Organization.
