Meeting my hero: Robert Plant

After 35 years of rocking out to Led Zeppelin, Andrew Johnson finally got to meet his childhood hero, the band’s lead singer Robert Plant.

When I recently flew up to Wellington for the Robert Plant concert I never dreamed 24 hours later I’d be standing in front of Rock’s Greatest Vocalist having a casual chat with him.

My wife and I were having a stroll along the waterfront the day after the concert when we bumped into a bloke wearing the same tour shirt as me.

He was very excited as he’d just met Plant at Te Papa. After a gentle jog to Te Papa we walked in and found him in the gift shop.

We stood behind him and waited patiently as he finished his business. Plant caught sight of us out the corner of his eye and turned and smiled and said, “What can i do for you”

I just happened to have a CD cover with me which he happily signed for me. We had a bit of a chat about the show, his partner Patty Griffin, and then I got to shake his hand and thank him for being such a big part of my life for 35 years.

What an affable bloke he was too, chatting away with us like we’d known him for years. So we flew home happy little Zep fans, our dream completed.
