Mayer and Perry ‘split amicably’

Katy Perry and John Mayer’s breakup was “a mutual decision”.

The couple reportedly split this week after dating on and off since 2012.

Despite rumours Perry initiated the separation, sources told Us Weekly it was actually a “mutual [and] extremely amicable” decision and they just decided “it was the right time” to part.

News of this recent breakup comes as a surprise considering how close the couple appeared recently.

Just two months ago Perry was telling Ellen DeGeneres how incredible she thought Mayer was and how well he understands her.

“We have music as an understanding and love between each other and we connect,” she said. “It’s like he understands what I do because he does the same thing. And so after a long day, if it’s been tough, I don’t really have to go into it. He just gets it.”

The Roar singer also rated Mayer’s talent as a songwriter, saying he impressed her every day. Katy insisted that while she finds John very good-looking, his intellect is just as attractive to her.

“He literally is a genius, as is evident from his songwriting. I always tell him, ‘Darling, you know I’m going to have to give your mind to science after you’ve passed, because we’re going to have to understand how all these sparks work,'” she told Billboard.

“We’ll be in bed and he’ll be doing the crossword puzzle. Every night, he tries to finish it in under 10 minutes. When he puts his mind to something, he really gets it done very well. I always ask for his help,” she added.
