Lorde’s school celebrates Grammy win

She’s unlikely to be back at school this year – but her famous face won’t be forgotten any time soon.

Classmates and teachers at Takapuna Grammar celebrated Lorde’s two Grammy awards with a large “congratulations” banner hoisted in her honour today, with back-to-school students buzzing about their friend’s win.

“It’s a fantastic day, it’s very exciting,” acting principal Brian Wynn said.

“All the students are new in today and they’re all bubbling and are very excited.

“I watched the awards and I know most of the students watched . . . Devonport was very quiet yesterday, they must have been in their lounges watching TV.”

Wynn said that despite Lorde’s rapid rise, she was unchanged, and her performance reflected that.

“She’s a confident, talented, just a brilliant young woman . . . her talent is immense and she deserves it.”

Neither Wynn nor the school’s head boy, Harry Ellworthy, thought their friend Ella Yelich-O’Connor would return to school this year, although they would like her to.

“I just love it every time she performs. She’s got her own style and stuff and that’s what makes her,” Ellworthy said.

He said the win was inspirational for the other students – and wasn’t totally unexpected given how far they’d seen their classmate come this year.

“On one hand you don’t expect it, but on the other hand it’s been so quick that nothing seems impossible anymore.”

Lorde is expected to arrive home tomorrow morning with her Grammy awards for both Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.

It will be straight from the Grammys’ stage to Auckland’s Silo park where the 17-year-old is performing her only New Zealand concert this summer.

Her two Grammys have boosted ticket sales for her performance tomorrow night.

Lorde scheduled a new stand-alone Auckland concert after having to cancel her performance at Laneway Festival so she could attend the Grammys.

Doors open at 6.30pm for the all-ages concert. Doprah and Watercolours will also perform.
