Keisha Morrison: Let’s talk about mental illness

Oscar-nominated actress Keisha Morrison has spoken out about her battle with bipolar disorder in the wake of Charlotte Dawson’s death in Sydney.

Whale Rider star Morrison, formerly Keisha Castle-Hughes, said it was time to have an open conversation about mental illness.

Morrison posted on her Facebook page that Dawson’s death on Saturday “is an absolute tragedy but herein is a very real yet harsh lesson for us all to never ignore any mental illness”.

“My name is Keisha Castle-Hughes and I am proud to tell you all that I have bipolar disorder. Let’s talk about it!” she wrote.

Morrison said she had battled with mental illness and addiction, and she understood how hard it was to see a way out of the darkness.

“The world can be a scary place, especially for those of us who are wired in a way where the simple ebbs & flows of life can throw us off-balance,” she wrote.

“There is so much stigma attached to mental illness and we have been given an opportunity now to openly have a conversation about what we can do to help others and reach out when we need.”

The 23-year-old tweeted on Saturday: “My heart is broken. We have lost a truly special wahine today. Moe mai Ra Charlotte.”
