Jane Fonda’s Barbarella movie to become TV remake

In 1968, the raunchy science fiction film Barbarella transformed Jane Fonda into a sex symbol. More than four decades later, it is to be remade as a television series.

The American television production arm of the French film studio Gaumont is developing a remake of the film – about a sexy agent sent by the president of Earth to find the scientist and Positronic Ray inventor, Dr Durand Durand – for the small screen.

The project is currently on the table at Amazon Studios, an emerging online player backed by the giant online retailer Amazon.

Amazon Studios is setting itself up as a rival to the major online players Netflix and Hulu.

The original film, directed by Roger Vadim, who was Fonda’s husband at the time, was based on a series of comics by author Jean-Claude Forest. They were first published as a strip in V Magazine, and later in a bound volume, which caused a furor because of its sexual content.

Remakes of the iconic 1968 film version have been discussed for decades.

A raft of high-profile actresses have been discussed with the project in mind, including Sherilyn Fenn and Drew Barrymore, who were suggested by Vadim himself, and later Sienna Miller and Rose McGowan.

More recently, Australian director Robert Luketic was attached to a cinema remake of the film which did not proceed.
