Hometown gig for Lorde

Just 48 hours after wowing a crowd of global super stars and taking home two Grammys, Lorde is due back on the stage in front of 10,000 hometown fans in Auckland tonight.

The multi-Grammy award winning 17-year-old artist, who was scheduled to land in Auckland early this morning, is due to take the stage in a special solo gig at Auckland’s Silo Park, after she pulled out of the Laneway festival to attend the award ceremony in LA.

“Capacity is the same as the whole of Laneway, which is 10,000 and it is approaching that fast. We probably won’t know if it is sold out until tomorrow night,” said show publicist Olivia Young last night.

Although Lorde, real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor, is unlikely to return to her school this year, classmates and teachers at Takapuna Grammar celebrated her two Grammy awards with a large “congratulations” banner hoisted in her honour yesterday, with back-to-school students buzzing about their friend’s win.

“It’s a fantastic day. It’s very exciting. All the students are new in today, and they’re all bubbling and are very excited,” said acting principal Brian Wynn.
