First glimpse: Diana film leaked

The teaser trailer for the Princess Diana biopic starring Naomi Watts surfaced online yesterday as a result of an unauthorised leak, the film’s Australian distributor claims.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported the claim as it gave details on what audiences can expect from the new film, Diana, which comes out later this year.

Film writer Stephanie Bunbury said movie-goers shouldn’t expect “a conspiracy film; there is nothing shot in a tunnel, no scenes imagining fights with Prince Charles. Dodi Fayed is just a flash in the pan.”

She goes on to say:

Writer Stephen Jeffreys based his script largely on the book Diana: her last love by journalist Kate Snell, about the secret relationship between the princess and heart surgeon Hasnat Khan that ended about three months before she died.

“I was struck in writing by the image of this guy in the Fulham Road late at night, with her coming out for secret rendezvous,” Jeffreys said. “It was an offbeat starting point. But all her life was a desperate quest for love.”

Watts says she spent six weeks with a dialogue coach to master Diana’s crisp, well-bred accent, but says her best voice source was the famous BBC interview she conducted with Martin Bashir.

“I’d find myself listening to it when I’d jog in the park or watch it before bed,” she says.

She admits she even dreamed about Diana. “I just felt I was spending time with her,” Watts says. “One particular time I felt permission was granted.”
