Fans queue to see Game of Thrones author

Newlands College head boy James Halpin has his final exam this afternoon but is doing his last-minute studies sitting on the footpath of Lambton Quay.

That is the pull of George RR Martin, author of the book series A Song of Ice and Fire, which have been turned into hit television series Game of Thrones. The books and TV series are set in a mythical world of warring factions.

Martin is doing a book signing at Lambton Quay Whitcoulls at 12.30pm today and the fans began queuing since before 8am. Shortly before his appearance a 400 metre long line of fans eager to get their copies signed had formed.

There is, it turns out, a chasm in quality between the books and television series.

“Someone walked past singing the theme song [to the series],” James said.

“I shouted out, ‘we love the books you heathen’. The books come first.”

But plenty in the line were also fans of the TV series with many of them getting into the books via the shows.
