Early Shakespeare theatre unearthed in London

16th Century Shakespearean Theater Discover as London Pub Owner Thinks of Remodeling

Shakespeare’s first theater has been discovered under a London Pub. Construction workers renovating behind a pub in London made an awesome discovery, the remains of a Shakespearean theater dating back to 1577.

The Curtain, predating the more famous globe theater, was likely the spot of the first performances of Romeo and Juliet and Henry V

Dominic Dromgoole, Current Director of The Globe, said of the discovery “I love the fact that we are excavating London, and slowly clearing away the miserable piles of Victoriana and Empire, And revealing the wild, anarchic and joyous London which is lurking beneath.”
