DVD review: The Almighty Johnsons Series 3

The Almighty Johnsons Series 3

(South Pacific Pictures, R16)

In what is most likely the last in this Kiwi comedy-drama series – despite a petition to get a fourth series to air – we finally get to see what happens when Axl (Odin) finds the real Frigg.

This series starts off with Axl heartbroken after his true-love Gaia, and the woman who was to become Frigg, actually turns into Idun – a goddess that is forever destined to be with Axl’s brother Anders (Bragi) This makes for some melancholy episodes as Axl struggles to reconcile the fact. His life begins to fall apart and he attempts to take his life by threatening to jump off a building.

Luckily Bragi is able to use his power of persuasion and stop him. But in true Almighty style, Axl has soon forgotten his love and starts the hunt to find the true Frig after a bit of spiritual enlightenment and a trip to Whangamomona.

Now I don’t want to reveal too much of the plot, in case you have been waiting for the DVD to find out what happens. What I will say is that this series is a vast improvement on Series 2, which just never really seemed to find its feet and had me really struggling to tune in.

It’s clear that a threat of cancellation really made the creators think about where the story was going and gave them a focus.

We actually get some real answers in this series and all the random story lines that have come in the two series before, finally start falling into place.
