Downey Jr.’s son ‘charged with drug possession’

Robert Downey Jr.’s son has reportedly been charged with felony drug possession.

Indio, 20, was arrested back in June after police allegedly spotted him smoking a substance in a pipe while a passenger in a car driving in West Hollywood, California.

Authorities later said Indio was caught in possession of cocaine.

However, due to this being Indio’s first offence, he has been automatically enrolled into a “drug diversion” programme, according to TMZ.com.

The website also reports Indio was charged with a second offense of “possession of drug paraphernalia”, a misdemeanour.

It was reported earlier this year that Indio had entered rehab at Cliffside in Malibu to receive treatment for drug addiction following his arrest.

Indio was previously treated for his use of prescription pills in October 2013. However, his mother Deborah Falconer, who married to Robert in 1992 and split from the actor in 2001, insisted her son wasn’t gripped by addiction at the time.

“He was not addicted,” she told National Enquirer at the time. “He was taking one pill a day…

“We are hoping to do it the homeopathic way rather than with medications. He’s being treated with vitamin supplements and organic foods. He’s doing great. He’ll be back playing music and doing better soon.”

Robert Downey Jr understands all too well what his son is going through, as he struggled with drug addiction himself for years. The 49-year-old endured several run-ins with the law, including an arrest for possession of heroin, cocaine and an unloaded handgun while speeding in his car and missing various drug tests. His downward spiral resulted in the actor doing nearly a year in California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and state prison in Corcoran, California in 1999.

The Iron Man actor has been open about his past, and has spoken about how his father allowed him to have marijuana at just six years old.

“It was like him trying to express his love for me in the only way he knew how,” he previously said.
