Deadly Japan mudslides, floods leave 9 missing

Rescue workers remove debris to search for survivors in Hofu city, Yamaguchi prefecture, on Wednesday.
Hundreds of rescue workers searched for missing residents Thursday — two days after torrential rains triggered floods and mudslides in western Japan and killed eight people.

All the victims who died in Tuesday’s incident in Yamaguchi prefecture were over 65, police said. In the city of Hofu, a mudslide struck a nursing home, killing five residents. Two were still missing, police said. Elsewhere in the city, the mudslide swallowed cars and swollen rivers washed away houses. Three people were killed and seven were missing.
