Bling Ring nicked Kerr’s knickers

Miranda Kerr is the latest celebrity to be revealed as a target of the Hollywood Bling Ring.

But it wasn’t jewels and designer handbags the gang sought to steal from the Australian supermodel, it was her underwear.

The Bling Ring, as they were named, was a group of teenagers with a penchant for breaking into celebrity homes and stealing expensive and exclusive belongings.

The gang forms the basis of Sophia Coppola’s film of the same name which premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival yesterday, and hits New Zealand cinemas soon.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, writer Nancy Jo Sales, who first immortalised the fame-crazed teens in a magazine story in 2010, reveals that the fresh-faced robbers were obsessed with stars’ lingerie.

“They wanted to look sexy. Looking sexy in a celebrity’s clothes, well that’s even sexier,” said Sales.

“Especially Miranda Kerr, who’s a Victoria’s Secret model. The fact that they stole the underwear just seems so weird, but it’s not weird when you think about it, because they’re growing up at a time when their culture is constantly telling them to be sexy.”

The Bling Ring netted around US$3 million worth of stolen goods from stars such as Paris Hilton, Audrina Patridge and Rachel Bilson.

According to Sales every single one of the people they robbed was connected to some entertainment product that was about wealth and privilege.

“Paris, it was The Simple Life; Audrina Patridge, of course, The Hills, about rich girls in L.A.; it just went on and on.

“Everything from toys to video games to music to fashion is hypersexualised for girls.

“Stealing their underwear was part of a whole trend to emulate these celebrities. They don’t just want expensive underwear; they want Paris Hilton’s underwear,” she said.

Miranda Kerr, one of the highest paid models in the industry, revealed last month that she was leaving high-profile clients Victoria’s Secret and David Jones.

The revelation does not appear to be slowing Kerr down, she is set to appear on the cover of Australian Marie Claire in June and was photographed during a new swimsuit shoot in Miami this week.
