Avatar ‘so much harder’ than LOTR

Director James Cameron says he had it tough making Avatar compared to Sir Peter Jackson with Lord of the Rings.

Cameron, 59, in an interview with Life Goes Strong, talked about his plans for upcoming movie Avatar 2.

He said he talked to Jackson about the challenges of creating a film not based on a novel.

“I said, ‘You had it easy dude’.”

“‘You had the books when you did the second and third Lord of the Rings. I have to create my own books in my head and extract a script from it.'”

Cameron wrote an 80-page treatment for the first movie in 1994, and wrote the script in the first four months of 2006, when there was technology available to realise the idea.

He said he is deep into the second movie and living in Pandora, which is the fictional universe he created for the film.

Cameron did the interview by phone, from the Wairarapa, where he was “writing on a little farm”.

“When you live in a special world like Pandora, you have to live in that world,” he added.
