Alexander McCall Smith heads to Dunedin

British best-selling author Alexander McCall Smith will head to Dunedin for its new literary festival while he is in the country for the Auckland Writers & Readers Festival.

Alexander McCall Smith, author of the international best-selling series, The No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, was announced yesterday as guest of the Auckland festival on May 14 to 18.

With the support of Auckland organisers, McCall Smith will also travel to Dunedin to be part of the inaugural Writers & Readers Festival which runs from May 8 to 11.

Alex Bligh, chairwoman of the organising committee, said it would be an incredible honour to have McCall Smith for the Dunedin event.

“It’s a real coup for the city and the many organisations and businesses that are supporting us,” she said.

McCall Smith is also the author of collections of short stories, academic works (he was a professor of medical law for many years), and more than 30 books for children.

He has received numerous awards for his writing, including the British Book Awards Author of the Year Award in 2004 and a CBE for service to literature in 2007. He holds honorary doctorates from nine universities in Europe and North America.
