Album review: Palms – Palms

PALMS
Palms
(Southbound)

Soundgarden’s Chris Donnell has done it and so too has Scott Weiland – jumped ship from their primary bands and teamed up with the remnants of another band to form Audioslave and Velvet Revolver respectively.

Now Deftones frontman Chino Moreno is keeping company with former members of Isis as Palms.

And while their self-titled debut isn’t wholly convincing it’s a more natural fit for all parties.

Moreno even at his most reflective drones away about – well, nothing really unless you find lines such as “I climbed into your mind I didn’t find anything worthwhile there” particularly self-aware – but if you forget about the lyrics the atmospheric prog rock which puts flesh to Moreno’s wounds is stunning as it swells and collapses in a kaleidoscope of sonic textures and spaced-out atmospheres.

Palms sound like a band who need to ditch the singer.
