Album review: Orange Syringe – Tom Morgan

ORANGE SYRINGE
Tom Morgan
(Southbound)

Nothing proves a singer-songwriter’s limitations more than being known for his time in a grunge band and writing great songs for a far prettier (and vocally talented) band.

Tom Morgan’s past credits include Aussie slacksters Smudge and songwriting credits for The Lemonheads.

It’s clear that downbeat pop songs come quite easily to Morgan and it’s slightly amazing it’s taken until now for him to produce a solo effort.

But Evan Dando he ain’t.

In an effort to let his forte shine, the spotlight sits firmly on the lyrics and his delivery and production dive for cover. Occasional organ interludes seem like interruptions and efforts to strain towards higher notes seem too forced to be slacker-cool.

And why the heck he has to sing about being “sodomised”, God only knows… I’d switched off by then.
