Album review: Love From London – Robyn Hitchcock

LOVE FROM LONDON
Robyn Hitchcock (Southbound)

If Syd Barrett had been slightly less crazy and a tad more of a diamond, would he have joined a 2008 polar expedition to highlight global warming accompanied by Jarvis Cocker

Because prolific oddball Robyn Hitchcock did.

And the 60-year-old psychedelic-poet rocker, who has managed to stay on the sidelines of great stardom while mixing it regularly with the likes of Peter Buck, John Paul Jones and Graham Coxon, is not slowing down yet.

Hitchcock’s stunning lyricism and haven’t-I-heard-that- somewhere-before sense of melody make for a great and fun combination … the sort of fun that comes with a weary sense that the world doesn’t make sense and we’re f**ked if we care.

“Rock and Roll is an old man’s game now, so I’m staying in it.” Well said.
